(photo Knickle's Photography Studio)A founding family of Lunenburg, the Bailly's who first arrived were school teachers and music masters. As Lunenburg grew, and industry flourished, blacksmith shops became a vital part of Lunenburg in the Age of Sail; not only shoeing horses, but making fittings for vessels sailing out of the harbour. Edwin Bailly, on the far left, opened this blacksmith shop on Montague St in the late 1880s. Second fron the right stands his son Harry Bailly, who took it over when Edwin founded what would become Bailly's Fuels. The building no longer stands, but acts as a yard for the neighbouring business Front Harbour Marine, owned by Anne Bailly and her husband, Tom Dauphinee. |
